چکیده

In this paper, a team of engineers from the Intel Non-Volatile Memory Solutions Group presents an approach to explore improving the architecture of solid-state drives (SSDs). This explorative approach is based on models captured using Intel® CoFluentTM Studio. The team’s goal was to identify how best to use a model-based approach to optimize the performance and cost of next generation Intel® Solid State Drives (Intel® SSDs), by making informed, data-driven decisions earlier in the design process.

Measuring Solid-State Drive Behavior

Solid-state drives (SSDs) are a potentially revolutionary new storage technology, but it is not clear that current generation drives are inherently superior to hard disks. In order to understand the performance of these new technologies, we measure two commercial SSDs, one from Intel, the other from Kingston, on a workload of 4K writes to randomized addresses across the entire address space of ...

Optimizing Database Operators by Exploiting Internal Parallelism of Solid State Drives

With the development of flash memory technology, flash-based solid state drives (SSDs) are gradually used in more and more devices and applications. In addition to characteristics of flash memory itself, a unique characteristic of SSDs, namely internal parallelism, should also be considered to improve performance of SSDs-based DBMSs, especially query processing. In this paper, we first describe...

Intel® X25-E and X25-M SATA Solid-State Drives have been designed to provide high performance and capacity density for use in applications which were limited by traditional hard disk drives (HDD), input/output (I/O) performance bottlenecks, or performance density (as defined by bandwidth and I/Os/sec per gigabyte, per Rack Unit (RU), per Watt required to power, and per thermal unit waste heat. ...

Scan and Join Optimization by Exploiting Internal Parallelism of Flash-Based Solid State Drives

Nowadays, flash-based solid state drives (SSDs) are gradually replacing hard disk drives (HDDs) as the primary non-volatile storage in both desktop and enterprise applications because of their potential to speed up performance and reduce power consumption. However, database query processing engines are designed based on the fundamental characteristics of HDDs, so they may not benefit immediatel...

The Truth About MapReduce Performance on SSDs

Solid-state drives (SSDs) are increasingly being considered as a viable alternative to rotational hard-disk drives (HDDs). In this paper, we investigate if SSDs improve the performance of MapReduce workloads and evaluate the economics of using PCIe SSDs either in place of or in addition to HDDs. Our contributions are (1) a method of benchmarking MapReduce performance on SSDs and HDDs under cons...
